This weekend the Stratford Tennis Club held its annual Men's and Ladies Doubles tournament. This tournament began 40 years ago with a format devised by Ray Cornish. The format was copied by other Clubs in the area. 10 years ago Scott and Sandra Barrett of Toronto, frequent participants in these events, formed the Tennisaccess tour that collected these tournaments (and added many others) into a year long tour. The anniversary weekend survived the weather scared and for the first time the Mixed Doubles was added on Sunday providing a full weekend of high calibre tennis at the Stratford Tennis Club.
The Ladies Doubles 'A' final saw Suzanne Edwards and Pat Babcock of Waterloo take the title with an 8-4 win over Sandra Barrett and Edith Howden of Toronto. The 'A' consolation winners were Pat Craton and Jen Vasic of Waterloo who beat Ashah and Shelina Ruda of Guelph 8-2 in the final.
The Men's Doubles 'A' champions are Kevin Drew and Adrian Winger of Guelph who completed a dominating day by scoring an 8-3 victory over Scott Barrett and Tony Lancia of Toronto in the final. Stratford's Bob Tamblyn and Max Besworth scored the home club's best 'A' result progressing to the quarterfinals. The 'A' consolation was won by Beau Frigault and Eric LaBlanc of Guelph 8-6 over Faruk Ruda of Guelph and Bill White of Stratford. Stratford's Nathan Duh and Greg Vivian fell in the consolation semifinals.
The Mixed Doubles on Sunday saw Stratford's best home team result. Krista Plociennik and Bob Tamblyn had a great run through the day advancing to the 'A' final before falling to Sandra Barrett and Tony Lancia of Toronto 8-5. Stratford's Johanna Billings and Richard Bast fell in the 'A' quarterfinals. The Mixed Doubles 'A' consolation final saw Karin Scicluna of Guelph and Paul Cornfield of Peterborough edge Sandra and Mike Sartor of Richmond Hill 8-6 to take the title.
