STRATFORD TENNIS LEAGUE NEWS

Bob Tamblyn cracks a backhand while leading OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY to a men's double victory


The Stratford Tennis League completed its fifth week of play. One team widened its first place lead, while a new team jumped into second place.

The early game saw the return to dominance by OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY as they pounded PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES 10 sets to 2 sets. The ladies #1 doubles had PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES get off to a great start as Linda Doig and Nancy Chung easily handled Nancy Rheaume and Sandie Ennett 6 - 2 , 6 - 1. Unfortunately for PHYSIO, that is where the success ended. The ladies #2 doubles went to OCCUPATIONAL as Cathy Mowbray and Monica Eickmeyer edged Lise Couture and Marilyn Holmes 7 - 5 , 6 - 3.

The mens #1 doubles had OCCUPATIONAL's Bob Tamblyn and Spencer Trachsel sweeping Chris Parson and Bill White 6 - 0 , 6 - 2. The mens #2 doubles was another close match that went OCCUPATIONAL'S way, as Murray Schiedel and Jagdish Patel nipped Morgan Davis and Nathan Walsh 7 - 5 , 6 - 3.

The mixed doubles sets all went OCCUPATIONAL'S way. The #1 mixed had Rheaume and Tamblyn win 6 - 1 over Doig and Parson. The #2 mixed saw Sonja Andrekovic and Trachsel make a big comeback to defeat Chung and White 7 - 5 . Mowbray and Schiedel took the #3 mixed set 6 - 2 over Couture and Davis , while Eickmeyer and Patel doubled up Holmes and Walsh 6 - 3 in the #4 mixed. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY continues to build on their huge first place lead in the standings, while PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES fall further behind in fourth place.

The late game was an impressive performance by The FLASHING PEARLIES. The ladies #1 doubles had DONKERS AGRI'S Johanna Billings and Maria Donkers taking the first set 7 - 6 (7 points to 4 in the tie-breaker) before the PEARLIES' team of Marta Andrekovic and Heather Henke rebounding to take the second set 6 - 2. The ladies #2 doubles went to the PEARLIES 6 - 2 , 6 - 2 as Marilyn Leasa and Edda Lang downed Jolanda Vandereijk and Noella Schiedel. The mens #1 doubles saw the PEARLIES' Richard Bast and Zdenko Andrekovic edge DONKERS John Noble and Shannon Dyke 6 - 3 , 7 - 5. There was a split in the mens #2 doubles as the PEARLIES' Brent Hiller and Mike Furlong won the first set 7 - 6 (7 points to 3 in the tie-breaker) and DONKERS Pat McCarroll and Jack Watson took the second set 6 - 1.

The #1 mixed doubles went to the PEARLIES as Andrekovic and Bast easily handled Billings and Noble 6 - 2. The #2 mixed saw Henke and Andrekovic of the PEARLIES defeat Donkers and Dyke 6 - 4 . Another tie-breaker went to the PEARLIES in the #3 mixed, as Leasa and Hiller held off Schiedel and McCarroll 7 - 6 (7-5). DONKERS got on the board in the #4 mixed as Vandereijk and Watson topped Lang and Furlong 7 - 5. With the win, the FLASHING PEARLIES passed DONKERS for second place in the standings.

Week 6 will see OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY battle DONKERS AGRI in the early game , with the FLASHING PEARLIES and PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES taking the court in the late game.

OPTIMIST JUNIOR TENNIS DAY



The Stratford Tennis Club hosted the annual Optimist Junior Tennis Day this past weekend. The event was scheduled for Saturday but due to the weather was moved to Sunday. Over 60 enthusiastic youngsters participated in this special event. Some of the top junior players from the Tennis Club helped supervise the activities. A splendid time was had by everyone in attendance. Thanks to all for making this day such a great success!

STRATFORD TENNIS LEAGUE WEEK 4

On June 21st, the Stratford Tennis League had another night of competitive play . The early game saw first place OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY involved in their first close match of the season against THE FLASHING PEARLIES. The late game had DONKERS AGRI avenge their week one loss to PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES.

The early game began with OCCUPATION THERAPY'S #1 men's doubles team of Bob Tamblyn and Spencer Trachsel taking 2 sets from THE FLASHING PEARLIES' team of Richard Bast and Zdenko Andrekovic 6 - 2 , 7 - 6 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker). In the #2 men's doubles the sets were split as OCCUPATIONAL'S Gustavo Garcia and Jagdish Patel took the first set 6 - 4, with the PEARLIES' Brent Hiller and Todd Chisholm taking the second set 6 - 4.

The FLASHING PEARLIES' ladies doubles #1 team of Marta Andrekovic and Marilyn Leasa swept OCCUPATIONAL'S Nancy Rheaume and Lise Couture 6 - 3 , 6 - 3. The #2 ladies doubles saw OCCUPATIONAL'S Cathy Mowbray and Monica Eickmeyer take the first set 6 - 0 before the PEARLIES' team of Sandra Darby and Ivy Chung rebounded to take the second set 6 - 3. This meant that the first eight sets had been split and the mixed doubles would determine the winner for the night.

The mixed doubles had Tamblyn and Rheaume down Bast and Andrekovic 6 - 2 to give OCCUPATIONAL the set lead in the match up. The PEARLIES evened the score by taking the #2 mixed set as Leasa and Andrekovic defeated Couture and Trachsel 6 - 3. The PEARLIES took the #3 mixed set 6 - 3 as Darby and Hiller beat Mowbray and Garcia, giving the PEARLIES the set lead. The #4 mixed set was taken by Eickmeyer and Patel of OCCUPATIONAL 6 - 2 over Chung and Chisholm. The match up ended in a 6 set to 6 set tie.

The late game started with DONKERS AGRI taking the two sets in the #1 men's doubles as John Noble and Shannon Dyke handled Chris Parson and Bill White of PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES 6 - 4 , 6 - 1. The #2 men's doubles had DONKERS Pat McCarroll and Jack Watson take the first set 6 - 3 before PHYSIO's Morgan Davis and Mike Furlong took the second set 6 - 4.

Linda Doig and Deb Murphy won the first set in the #1 ladies doubles for PHYSIO, 6 - 4 but, DONKERS Maria Donkers and Gail Shelton took the second set 6 - 0. The #2 ladies doubles went to PHYSIO as Nancy Chung and Marilyn Holmes swept Sandie Ennett and Jolanda Vandereijk 6 - 2 , 6 - 3.

Like the early game, the mens' and ladies' doubles had been split and the match would be decided by the mixed doubles matches. DONKERS took control by taking the #1 mixed set as Donkers and Noble edged Doig and Parson 7 - 6 (7 - 2 in the tie-breaker). The #2 mixed also went DONKERS' way, as Shelton and Dyke handled Murphy and White 6 - 2. Ennett and McCarroll continued DONKERS run, downing Chung and Davis 6 - 4 in the #3 mixed doubles. The mixed set sweep was completed when Vandereijk and Watson scored a 6 - 2 win over Holmes and Furlong. Winning the 4 mixed sets, gave DONKERS an 8 - 4 win on the night and vaulted them into second place in the standings.

After 4 weeks of play. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY remains confortably in first place and DONKERS AGRI hops into second place. The FLASHING PEARLIES are one point behind in third place and PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES are in fourth place. Week 5 will see PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES face OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY in the early game, while DONKERS AGRI will play The FLASHING PEARLIES in the late game.

ROYAL LePAGE HILLER REALTY " FRENCH OPEN"

The Stratford Tennis Club held the second leg of the Royal LePage Hiller Realty Junior Grand Slam this past weekend. The "French Open" welcomed 40 junior club players and a couple out of towners .
The Girls Singles champion was Sonja Andrekovic, who defeated Marley Hiller , 8 - 1 in the French cham
pionship final . This was her second consecutive win at this event , having won the Australian championship last month. The consolation final saw the event's youngest competitor , Nicolle Crowley, down Jenna Lobsinger 8 - 3.

The Boys Under 12 champion was Ryan Lay. Ryan scored an 8 - 5 victory over Stefan Andrekovic to claim his first grand slam title. The Under 12 consolation title went to Dorian Redfern who downed
Bradley Kraemer 8 - 7 (7 points to 4 in the tie-breaker) in the final.

Grant McPherson won the Boys Under 14 championship. Grant won his first grand slam singles title by downing defending champion (and Australian Open winner), Luke Fischer , 8 - 3 in the championship match. A thrilling consolation final saw Jarett Bogdan, edge Lukas Kaufman,
8 -7 (7 - 3 in the tie-breaker) for the title.

The Boys Under 18
final saw PJ. Conlon of Goderich dominate John Fischer (the Australian Open winner of this event ) 8 -1. Jeremy Chisholm scored an 8 -6 win over Ciaran Buckley in the consolation final.

Doubles events were held on Sunday and saw some very impressive play. In the Girls Doubles event , Sonja Andrekovic and Alexandra Andrekovic dominated the field. The sisters took the final, 8 - 1 over Caitriona Buckley and Jenna Lobsinger.

The Boys Doubles
also had sibilings take the title. John and Luke Fischer scored an 8 - 5 victory over Grant McPherson and Aidan Buckley in the final. The consolation winners are Braydon McCann and Tim Clay who downed Stefan Andrekovic and Luke McCarroll 8 - 3, for the title.

The Mixed Doubles final was the match of the day. Alexandra Andrekovic and Grant McPherson were the champions after a thrilling 8 -7 (7 - 3 in the tie-breaker) victory over Sonja Andrekovic and James Wilson. Jenna Lobsinger and Lukas Kaufman took the consolation championship with a 8 - 4 win over Caitriona Buckley and Leam Hughes in the final.
Competitive play moves aside next Saturday, June 25th, as the Club hosts the OPTIMIST JUNIOR TENNIS DAY. The morning of fun, recreational tennis games begins at 10:00am and is open to membe
rs and non-members of the Club. The Grand Slam series returns to action again on July 16th, with the "Wimbledon" event.

THE PAST WEEK

The matches of week three of The Stratford Tennis League followed a familar pattern. The early game was a nail biter, while the late game was a blow out. Occupational Therapy continued to dominate their competition, while the other teams proved to be evenly matched.
The early game had the FLASHING PEARLIES face PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES. The ladies #1 doubles went to the PEARLIES as Marta Andrekovic and Heather Henke scored a 6 - 2 , 6 - 2 victory over PHYSIO's Deb Murphy and Nancy Chung. PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES evened the match when Lise Couture and Marilyn Holmes took the ladies #2 doubles 6 - 3 , 6 -3 over Sandy Darby and Ivy Chung.
The men's #1 doubles was swept by Richard Bast and Zdenko Andrekovic of the PEARLIES 6 - 0 , 6 -4 over Chris Parson and Nathan Walsh. The men's #2 doubles was a 6 - 1 , 6 - 1 victory by PHYSIO's Morgan Davis and Mike Furlong over Todd Chisholm and Sing Chung, once again evening the match.
The #1 mixed doubles set went to the PEARLIES as Andrekovic and Bast edged Murphy and Parson 6 - 4. The PEARLIES also took the #2 mixed match with a 6 - 1 win by Henke and Andrekovic over Chung and Walsh. PHYSIO responded by taking the #3 mixed doubles with a 6 - 1 victory by Couture and Davis over Darby and Chisholm. Holmes and Furlong scored a 6 - 1 win over Chung and Chung in the #4 mixed set, leaving the teams in a 6 set to 6 set tie for the match.
The late game was another BIG win for OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. This weeks opponent was DONKERS AGRI who managed to win 2 sets while Occupational took 10 sets. The games began with Occupational's ladies #1 doubles team of Lori McCabe and Nancy Rheaume scoring a close 6 - 3 , 7 - 5 victory over Johanna Billings and Maria Donkers. The #2 ladies doubles saw Annette Garneau and Monika Eickmeyer give Occupational another two sets downing Sandie Ennett and Noella Schiedel 6 - 2 , 6 - 4. Bob Tamblyn and Spencer Trachel won the men's #1 doubles for OCCUPATIONAL 6 - 4 , 6 - 2 over Shannon Dyke and Pat McCarroll. The #2 men's doubles completed the early domination with Murray Schiedel and Gustavo Garcia defeating Jack Watson and Paul Barclay 6 - 3 , 6 - 3.
The mixed doubles #1 match went to McCabe and Tamblyn 6 - 3 over Billings and Dyke. Donkers took their first set of the night in the #2 mixed doubles as Donkers and McCarroll thumped Rheaume and Trachsel 6 - 1. OCCUPATIONAL snuck out a 7 - 6 win in the #3 mixed doubles as Garneau and Schiedel edged Ennett and Watson. The #4 mixed set went to Donkers with Schiedel and Barclay downing Eickmeyer and Garcia 7 - 5.
After 3 weeks OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY has three decisive wins and are well out in front in the standings. PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES and The FLASHING PEARLIES are tied for second place with DONKERS AGRI just one point behind in fourth place. Next weeks matches see The FLASHING PEARLIES face OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY in the early game and DONKERS AGRI meeting PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES in the late game.

Last weekend, the Stratford Tennis Club hosted their annual TENNIS ACCESS TOUR event. Saturday saw play in Men's and Ladies Doubles , with Mixed Doubles play on Sunday. Players from Toronto and southwestern Ontario took part in the 2 day event. Many players from the home club participated and several had great success.
In the Ladies Doubles event Stratford's Krista Plociennik and Debbie Murphy advanced to the 'A' final before falling to Sandra Barrett (Toronto) and Sophie LaPlante (Sarnia), 8 games to 4. The Ladies 'B' title went to Waterloo's Lisa Hoffman and Irene Janzen when Jackie Day and Edith Howden of Toronto had to withdraw after falling behind 4 - 0 in the final.
The Men's 'A' championship went to Matt Brown (Waterloo) and Ray Thompson (Toronto) who defeated Scott Barrett and Tony Lancia 8 - 6 in a very exciting final. Brown and Thompson had eliminated Stratford's Bob Tamblyn and his partner Chris DeVriendt of Waterloo in the semifinals, while Barrett and Lancia took out Stratford's Max Besworth and Ryan Magagnin in their semifinal. In the Men's 'B' final Wayne Ivey (Toronto) and Damon LaPlante (Sarnia) scored an 8 - 5 victory over Barrie's Gary Helmkay and Logan Dayus to take the title. Ivey and LaPlante had edged Stratford's Greg Vivian and Nathan Duh 8 - 7 in the semifinals.
In Sunday's Mixed Doubles events, Sandra Barrett and Tony Lancia defended the title they won last year, taking down Stratford's Krista Plociennik and Mike Jauncey of Toronto 8 - 4 in the final. The 'A' consolation winners are Patty Thornicroft and Kerem Usenmez (Mississauga) who scored an 8 - 5 win over Stratford's Johanna Billings and Greg Vivian. Stratford got a piece of the Mixed 'B' title when the home club's Nathan Walsh teamed with Gillian Scarfe of Toronto to to down Irene Janzen and Mike Hughey of Waterloo 8 - 4 in the title match. Stratford's Maria Donkers and Wayne Ivey of Toronto won the 'B' consolation title 8 -5 over Waterloo's Lisa Hoffman and Akio Saito.

Stratford Tennis League Week Two

Zdenko Andrekovic of The Flashing Pearlies returns a volley in the Men's # 1 Doubles

The second week of the Stratford Tennis League was played on Tuesday evening. In the early game DONKERS AGRI and The FLASHING PEARLIES battled to a 6 - 6 tie in sets won. The Mens #1 Doubles was swept by Richard Bast and Zdenko Andrekovic of the PEARLIES 6 - 0 , 7 - 6 (7 points to 4 in the tie-breaker) over John Noble and Shannon Dyke. DONKERS responded by taking the Men's #2 Doubles 6 - 1, 6 - 2 as Pat McCarroll and Jack Watson dominated Paul Barclay and Sing Chung.

The FLASHING PEARLIES #1 Ladies doubles team of Marta Andrekovic and Claire Scott took both their sets with a 6 - 4 , 6 - 0 victory over Johanna Billings and Gail Shelton. The Ladies #2 doubles split their sets, as the PEARLIES Sandra Darby and Ivy Chung won the first set 6 - 4 and DONKERS Sandie Ennett and Jolanda Vandereijk came back to win the second set 6 - 3.


DONKERS AGRI took 3 of the 4 Mixed Doubles sets. In the #1 Mixed, DONKERS' Billings and Noble handled Andrekovic and Bast 6 - 2. The FLASHING PEARLIES #2 Mixed team of Scott and Andrekovic scored a 6 - 2 win over Shelton and Dyke. Ennett and McCarroll of DONKERS scored a 6 - 4 victory over Darby and Barclay in the #3 Mixed match up. DONKERS secured the tie in sets, when the # 4 Mixed set was won by Vandereijk and Watson 6 - 2, over Chung and Chung.

The late game was a complete domination by OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY as they took PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES, 11 to 1 in sets. OCCUPATIONAL started with a 6 - 3 , 6 - 2 win by #1 Mens Doubles team of Bob Tamblyn and Spencer Trachsel over Chris Parson and Bill White. Murray Schiedel and Jagdish Patel of OCCUPATIONAL took the #2 Mens Doubles 6 - 3 , 7 - 5 over Nathan Walsh and Morgan Davis. The Ladies #1 Doubles saw a split of sets as OCCUPATIONAL'S Lori McCabe and Annette Garneau took the first set 7 -5 before PHYSIOTHERAPY'S Linda Doig and Deb Murphy won their team's only set of the night, with a 6 -1 win in the second set. Cathy Mowbray and Monica Eickmeyer of OCCUPATIONAL swept the Ladies #2 Doubles 6 - 2 , 6 - 4 over Nancy Chung and Lise Couture.

OCCUPATIONAL kept the wins going, as they swept all 4 Mixed Doubles sets. In the #1 Mixed match McCabe and Tamblyn shutout Doig and Parson 6 - 0. Garneau and Trachsel made a big comeback, winning the last 5 games to score a 7 -5 victory over Murphy and White. Mowbray and Schiedel took the #3 Mixed Doubles set 6 -3 over Chung and Walsh. The #4 Mixed Doubles set was won 6 - 4 by Eickmeyer and Patel, over Couture and Davis, to complete the big night for OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY.


Week 3 will see PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES face The FLASHING PEARLIES in the early game and in the late game DONKERS AGRI will try to slow down the red hot OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY.

The STRATFORD TENNIS LEAGUE began play in its second season, this past Tuesday evening. Four teams will participate in the nine week regular season. The competition includes matches in Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.


In week one's early match, PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES edged DONKERS AGRI 7 sets to 5 sets. The ladies #1 doubles saw a split of sets as PHYSIO'S Linda Doig and Debbie Murphy took the first set 6-4 before DONKERS Johanna Billings and Maria Donkers rebounded to take the second set 7-5. The #2 ladies doubles also split sets with DONKERS Gail Shelton and Noella Schiedel winning the first set 6-2 and PHYSIO'S Nancy Chung and Lise Couture prevailing in the second set 6-3. The splits continued in the mens #1 doubles as Chris Parson and Bill White of PHYSIO,
won the first set 6-3 and Shannon Dyke and Pat McCarroll of DONKERS won the second set 6-4. PHYSIO won both mens #2 doubles as Morgan Davis and Mike Furlong took down DONKERS Jack Watson and David Hazelton 7-5, 6-2.

The 4 mixed doubles sets were split with two wins each. DONKERS won the #1 mixed with Billings and Dyke downing Doig and Parson 6-3. Donkers and McCarroll defeated Murphy and White 7-5 to give another set to DONKERS. The #3 mixed set went to PHYSIO as Chung and Davis edged Shelton and Watson 7-6 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker). PHYSIO secured the win when the #4 mixed set was taken by Couture and Furlong 6-1 over Schiedel and Hazelton.


The late game saw OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY dominate THE FLASHING PEARLIES 10 sets to 2, despite some closely contested games. OCCUPATIONAL'S #1 ladies doubles , Nancy Rheaume and Annette Garneau won their two sets, 6-3 , 7-5 over PEARLIES Marta Andrekovic and Heather Henke. The #2 ladies doubles split their sets with OCCUPATIONAL'S Cathy Mowbray and Monica Eickmeyer taking the first set 6-2 and The PEARLIES Marilyn Leasa and Ivy Chung taking the second set 7-6 (7-3 in the tie-breaker). OCCUPATIONAL'S #1 mens doubles team of Bob Tamblyn and Spencer Trachsel won both their sets against PEARLIES Richard Bast and Zdenko Andrekovic winning 6-4 , 7-6 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker). The mens #2 doubles saw OCCUPATIONAL dominate as Murray Schiedel and Jagdish Patel crushed PEARLIE'S Brent Hiller and Todd Chisholm 6-1, 6-1.

The #1 mixed doubles went to OCCUPATIONAL'S Rheaume and Tamblyn 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker) over Andrekovic and Bast. The PEARLIES took the #2 mixed set with Henke and Andrekovic downing Garneau and Trachsel 6-4. Mowbray and Schiedel beat Leasa and Hiller 6-2 for OCCUPATIONAL's 9th set won. OCCUPATIONAL continued their close set wins when the #4 mixed set went to Eickmeier and Patel 7-6 (7 - 3 in the tie-breaker) over PEARLIES Chung and Chisholm.

Play continues next Tuesday with DONKERS AGRI facing The FLASHING PEARLIES in the early game and PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATES meeting OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY in the late game.
